What’s so cool about the Moorish Idol?

The Moorish idol is the only species in the Family Zanclidae. It is one of the most beautiful fish to keep in your marine aquarium.  It is a difficult to fish to acclimate that will typically starve itself to death if it’s not comfortable. Try to buy a Moorish Idol that is already eating before brining the specimen home. The dorsal spines are elongated into a whip-like filament. The body has three vivid wide black and two pale yellow bars. The protruding, tubular snout has a yellow saddle across the top and contains long, bristle-like teeth. The Moorish idol has distinctive black, yellow and white coloration.

The Moorish Idol got its name from the Moors of Africa, who purportedly believed the fish to be a bringer of happiness.

Where does the Moorish Idol live?

The Moorish Idol is from the Indo-Pacific, Hawaii region. Keep the temperature between 75-82° F, alkalinity between 8-12, and pH range from 8.1-8.4, preferably in a 100 gallon tank or larger.

What to feed the Moorish Idol?

The Moorish idol will eat brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, algae. It is an omnivorous fish.
